The Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck,a clown for hire and unsuccessful stand-up comedian who spends his days struggling to take care of invalid mother and control a neurological disorder (one which causes him to spontaneously laugh),in the mean streets of Gotham City circa the 1980s.
The film has been getting mixed reactions from critics and fans alike, due to directors Todd Phillips decision to step away from the source material, in favor of trying to ground the Joker persona by making a gritty character drama that draws inspiration from films like Taxi Driver ,The King of Comedy, and Clockwork Orange.
After watching the film my only issue with the Joker is that the director borrows a little too heavily from those classic films, so instead of giving us a gritty character study we get the Joker simply recycling iconic scenes without adding anything new to them.
In my opinion Joker is very entertaining watch if you get past the fact that this film sits completely apart from not only the DC Cinematic Universe, but comic book movies entirely.
