E3 2019: Ubisoft Press Conference

Updated: Nov 20, 2022

Introduction

Ubisoft is probably the gaming company that resembles Nintendo in a lot of ways. They have a ton of different types of games from car racing to action FPS's. So I come in these thing with little expectation as Ubisoft is always able to surprise us.

Announcements

Watch Dogs Legion

I was never a huge fan of the Watch Dogs series. I have a few downloaded that I got free with XBOX Live with Gold. It is just games that I never got to play.

Having seen the trailer for this game, my jaw dropped. This game looked spectacular and some of the gameplay features were pretty good as well. One of the big selling points was the fact that you can play as any NPC (non-Playable Character) in the city. I am not sure how that will work out, but it seems really cool.

They showed an old grandmas who as a retired assassin kicking butt. That was cool. This seems to be a strong entry for the franchise.

Rainbow Six Quarantine

This game is the next game in the Rain Six Siege series. This is a PvE game that has not real release date as of now.

Gods of Monsters

This is the kind of game that looked like a passion project for someone and they decided to make it. It is from the creators of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. The gameplay looked like Zelda: Breath of the Wild in terms of graphics. This was a throw in at the end of the show.

The premise seems pretty cool with the tagline, "when gods needs help, where do they turn? They turn to you.".

Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Ubisoft spent quite a few minutes on this game. The game was presented by Jon Bernthal who is best known as The Punisher on the Netflix series of the same name.

The part of the announcement that was cool is that they announced a Terminator crossover planned for it. I found that to be pretty cool even though I know it is only a gimmick.

Roller Champions

I have to admit that this seems cool on paper but I will probably never play it. This seems like an old school roller derby. I do not know any kid that knows what this is anymore but it does not mean that it cannot be fun.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey Creator Mode

This was one of my favourite games that I played in 2018. It was vast and fun as hell. Well, you will have a chance to expend even more with the brand new creator mode. This will allow a player to create some levels and maps and share them with other players. I think this is a great idea. I hvae no clue how this will work but if it is half as good as it sounds, I am sold!

Tom Clancy's Elite Squad

This is another mobile game that to be honest, I did not really care for. I just do not play these games so I do not pay too much attention to them.

The Division 2

I admit that this felt like a filler and could have been presented in a press release. Basically it outlined new locations where you will be able to play which is the Pentagon and New York.

Rainbow Six Siege

They only announced Year 4: Phantom Sight. Since I am not a big Siege player, this did not effect me at all. However, I am sure that fans of the series will be happy.

Uplay+

Last but not least, Ubisoft announced their own version of XBOX Game Pass but for their service. This was a little predictable. XBOX Game Pass has been very popular and now companies will copy a winning model. The problem is that now these services are starting to be like movie streaming services and will become saturated. Some of these will fail and I see the same here. I do not see why you would get this for 15$ a month. If you already have a service to something, you will not buy extra for this. We shall see how this pans out.

Bottomline

How was this press conference? I think it was alright. There were more games that I did not care about than games that I did care about.

I am very excited to see Watch Dogs Legion. It looked wicked. I am also intrigued by the creator mode for Assassin"s Creed.

After that it all falls apart for me. Although I have played some Rainbow Six and other similar games, they are not my first choice of games to play. I will play them usually when i am bored or if I get a copy free on XBOX Live which is the case for 2 of the games in the franchise.

Having said that, Ubisoft has always put out quality products in general. Yes there were bumps in the road but their games have usually been really fun. I expect the same with this lineup. Gods and Monsters looks interesting as well.
