Army of Darkness is one of my all-time guilty pleasures. So, I thought I would write about this truly underappreciated feature film.
Army of Darkness is the third installment in director Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy. The film was released in 1992 and starred none other than the king of B-movies, Bruce Campbell.
The film continues after the events of Evil Dead 2 with Ash being sucked into a time portal and landing in the Middle Ages. Most of the film deals with our hero kicking zombie ass and trying to retrieve the Necronomicon, the Sumerian book of the dead, so he can get home.
What I really enjoyed about Army of Darkness is that the film really took the franchise to a very imaginative new direction. The first in the trilogy was a straight forward horror whereas Evil Dead 2 was a horror-comedy; this installment is a time-traveling, fish out of water, A three Stooges-esque , slapstick comedy with a touch of horror kind of film.
Army of Darkness is tailored made for the geek audience. The film plays out like a live action cartoon, being openly camp and proud of it.
Bruce Campbell offers, in my opinion, one the most hilarious performances ever put to film. Campbell delivers dozens of ridiculous lines with such deadpan seriousness (Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun. You ain't leadin' but two things right now: Jack and sh*t, and Jack left town.), that would have had the late Leslie Nielsen jealous.
Till this day, there is no other franchise that has taken such a risk in playing with formula like the Evil Dead films.
So if you love B-movies that merge effortlessly into multiple genres, then look no further than Army Of Darkness.
