I'm quite upset that the next 2 Star Trek feature films have been shelved. I've always been a huge Star Trek fan and I was enjoying this new take from J.J. Abrams. For me, the last film, Star Trek : Beyond, started to resemble the comradery felt in the original series.
What really got me excited however, was the prospect of Quentin Tarantino delivering a script to Paramount. Can you even imagine. what Tarantino's eye would provide? There'd be such an interesting and intriguing spin on this franchise. Besides, his name-power alone would spark some real interest in this underutilized franchise.
Paramount never really made a proper investment into this franchise until J.J. Abrams came on board. And, as entertaining as those films were, I could only imagine what could have been done with the William Shatner and Patrick Stewart feature films, if they were given the same TLC as JJ's films.
Let's face it, Paramount Pictures have always been Scrooge-like when it came to money for this franchise. Their reliance on the Star Trek fan base alone, has made them a nice chunk of change but imagine what reaching out "Beyond" could bring in. Definitely a fumble on their part.
Now, I understand the problems of getting both Chrises (Pine and Hemsworth) to sign and get on board. Their careers have just exploded. But just shelving the next two feature films? In my opinion, someone is being incredibly lazy and couldn't be bothered to find a solution. Damn it, this cast have really embraced their characters and the last film was the closest attempt ever to getting to be an old-school Star Trek film.
They say that good things come to those who wait. So I'm hoping that all the stars align and we get the Trek films that we have been waiting for.
I just hope we get these films come out before the next Pon farr.
So, live long and prosper and boldly go where no man has gone before!
