Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) - Review

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

Homecoming takes place a few months after Spider-Man’s introduction into the MCU in Civil War. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is making the most of Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) enhanced Spidey custom, to fight crime in his neighborhood of Queens, New York. Eager and anxious to prove himself to Stark and earn a spot on the Avengers` roaster, Peter searches out adventure and stumbles upon a black market weapons operation run by Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton).

Being that it was the fifth feature film and the third actor to play the infamous web-slinger in the last 15 years, I was reluctant to see Homecoming. The thought of sitting through another origin story was beginning to get my spider senses tingling and warning me of the imminent origin story boredom. Honestly, I’m glad I went to see the film, Spider-Man Homecoming may be the best edition in the franchise, since Spider-Man 2.

Thankfully audiences are spared seeing Peter being bit by the radioactive spider and the death of uncle Ben for what seems like the 100th time. The behind the scene creative team for Marvel have dealt with the reboot problem rather well. A short light hearted conversation between Peter and his BFF Ned (Jacob Batalon). Cool. Homecoming also distinguishes itself from the other films by dealing a lot more with Peter Parker’s school life, rather than the over the top soap-opera-ish love story between he and Mary Jane Watson. This gives fans a fresh and exciting new take on our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

However, ass always, my issue with the MCU has always been the villains. Although Keaton’s performance as the Vulture is great and perhaps the strongest villain performance in a Marvel film to date, it’s still a little lacking for my taste and this being the fifth film; the excitement level has diminished. Besides that, I did enjoy the film.

All in all, this is still the best Spider-Man feature film in a long time. I only wish that this came out right after Spider-Man 2 instead of the disastrous 2007’s Spider- Man 3.
