This is the first live action film based on the Japanese manga and anime series of the same name. Besides the obvious whitewashing, its biggest obstacle is trying to convey the plight of the main character, Major, played by Scarlett Johansson. We never really feel part of Major’s journey; whereby she tries to find balance between her mind and the machine as well as the world she lives in. In fact, all the characters’ story arcs never really come to fruition.

If you love the manga/anime version of GITS, you will most likely be disappointed. I’m hoping that there is a director’s cut of the film that expands the story arc. The film is a visual feast for the eyes but like its main character, it struggles to find the human element that would engage movie goers. If you really want to see the film on the big screen however I’d suggest a matinee screening; the ticket price is a little more reasonable.
