A global warming experiment backfires and sends the world into another ice age. Earth’s survivors are placed on a train called the “Snowpiercer” powered by a perpetual engine.
Once on board the train a division is created, with the poor surviving in the tail section of the train and the elite living in the front of the train. A young man named Curtis (Chris Evans) decides to lead a revolt to take control of the engine and end the division and suffering once and for all.
The film is directed by Korean film maker Joon-ho Bong who made a name for himself with the 2006 cult monster movie The Host. From the looks of it, Snowpiercer could be the film that gets Joon-ho noticed by Sci-fans in North America.
The film was made on a modest budget of around 40 million and at times does look like a B-movie. But with fine performances from the cast (Chris Evans, Ed Harris, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton &Jamie Bell) combined with Joon- ho’s ability to mix action, brutal violence &social commentary makes Snowpiercer a great distraction from those tired of the rehashed films being released today.
If you have an open mind and want to see a different kind of Sci-fi movie then climb aboard the Snowpiercer.
